In 2006, Bethesda Softworks LLC, Ubisoft Entertainment SA, 1C Company published Star Trek: Legacy on Windows. This action, strategy and simulation game is set in a real-time, sci-fi / futuristic, licensed title, space flight and tv series themes.
This guide is meant to help you locate the source files for the PC game that is now abandonware, the released patches, and the Ultimate Universe expansion mods.
NOTE: Installing the Ultimate Universe expansion mod is known to break the single-player story mode. You may wish to have two installations - one clean and patched, and the other modded.

Once Star-Trek-Legacy_Win_<language>_ISO-Version.iso downloads, Windows 10/11 File Manager should allow the file to be mounted and executed (as if you had inserted the original game disc/CD). If not, you can use 3rd party software such as 7-Zip to extract the files to a temporary folder, then run setup.exe.
I recommend using an easy to remember install folder as the patches and mods will need to be installed in the same place.
Once the main game is installed, run in order (be sure to use the same install folder as the main game):
Star-Trek-Legacy_Patch_Win_EN_Patch-11.exe
Star-Trek-Legacy_Patch_Win_EN_Patch-12.exe
Star-Trek-Legacy_Patch_Win_EN_Patch-13.exe
IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO USE THE EXPANSION MODS, STOP AT THIS STEP. IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A SECOND INSTALLATION FOR THE EXPANSION MODS, REPEAT THE STEPS ABOVE BUT USE A DIFFERENT DESTINATION FOLDER.
Expansion Mods
Note: there are older mods and ship add-ons that are not covered in this guide. Rule of thumb: oldest mods should be installed first. Browse the list of mods and decide what you want to use before you begin installing anything!

Crashing Issues
To play older games that require Windows XP on modern systems, you can use a virtual machine emulator like VirtualBox or VMware, or try compatibility mode settings within your current operating system. Virtual machines create a separate environment mimicking Windows XP, while compatibility mode adjusts settings to trick the game into thinking it's running on an older system.
Using a Virtual Machine:
Install a hypervisor: Choose a virtualization software like VirtualBox or VMware.
Create a virtual machine: Set up a new virtual machine, selecting Windows XP as the operating system.
Install and run your game: Install the game within the virtual machine's Windows XP environment and launch it.
Using Compatibility Mode:
Locate the game executable: Find the .exe file that launches the game.
Open Properties: Right-click on the .exe file and select "Properties".
Go to the Compatibility tab: Click on the "Compatibility" tab.
Enable Compatibility Mode: Check the box labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for:".
Select Windows XP: Choose the appropriate version of Windows XP (e.g., Windows XP (Service Pack 2)) from the dropdown menu.
Run as Administrator: If necessary, check the box labeled "Run this program as an administrator".
Apply and OK: Click "Apply" and then "OK" to save the changes.
Run the game: Launch the game executable to see if it works.
Troubleshooting:
Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter: If compatibility mode doesn't work, try using the Windows troubleshooter.
Check for patches: Visit websites like PCGamingWiki to see if there are any patches available for your specific game.
